For the past couple of years, #kbeauty was a great deal (and still is). I would say more broadly east Asian skin care philosophy or products that the West went crazy about. I am generally not a fan on skincare trends because skin is skin, and skincare fundamentals remain the same regardless of what fancy vocabulary it was given. I don’t use and know a lot of Korean beauty products because there’s just plenty of choices for the average consumer like me. Of course, there were brands with hefty marketing budget and their star products were all over the ads in every single platform. The smaller, upcoming and slightly niche brands then fell out of my sight - I only have one face and there’s so much I could do! Also, my past experience informed me that I need more than just hydration and brightening, which kbeauty do best and therefore more suited to younger people.
My stereotype was wrong when I was introduced to Vegreen. The brand me to send over some products for trials and the products were in my stash for a good half year. My only regret was I did not unbox them earlier.
About the brand
Vegreen stands for Vegan and Green. Vegreen is a brand where the ethos is heavily focused on sustainability and veganism. There’s a lot of sustainability pledges and information on how to recycle their products on their website– which is brilliant, but it is the products that spoke for themselves.
Let’s start the review the sequence I would use all the products in a skincare routine.
Rice Facial Wash Cleanser
This is a beautifully formulated, basic (a compliment) second cleanse that I believe suits everyone, even young people and teenage skin. A small dollop of product creates a sufficient lather that thoroughly clean the skin and leave skin feeling supple and hydrated. This formulation delivers a very balanced cleanse. There’s no overly stripped squeaky clean over-cleansed feeling oilier skins fancy, nor any film/nourishing layer drier skin prefer – this is a sweeping generalisation, but you get my point. Now back in a humid climate, I just want to get my second / AM cleanse done in the shower under cold water. I can’t be splashing all over the sink and the plastic soft tub sits perfectly in the bathroom. The lid is perfectly tight without any water leaking into it.
The brand stars rice water extract as the first ingredient (74.96%) and how it supposed to “effectively absorb wastes in the pores”. I am sceptical on the statement as I am not educated enough to prove the statement otherwise scientifically, but I do appreciate that the brand says, “contains a large amount of amylose-dissolved rice extract instead of purified water, providing excellent pore care effects”. This reminds me that I used to wash my face with rice water during the teenage years and that was the zero-cost beauty tip handover from generations in eastern traditions. I don’t think the tradition had miraculously change my skin years later.
Fragrance-Free Nature Mucin Serum
This is my star product of the entire range! I was only inclined to try a mucin serum because there’s no actual snail mucin (the thought of it makes me gag!) and I’m happy that I actually preserve through. This is a very beautiful hydration serum – it actually does provide sustained hydration by replenishing ‘water’ to the skin and not nourishment, which is usually more emollient. I simply don’t appreciate hydration products to be too heavy in texture because they’ll end up moving around the skin surface. The serum is lightweight, almost gelee like, and upon contact into the skin, burst into hydration liquid. My only complaint is that I want this in a 200ml tub with a pump, simply because I’m greedy and I can’t get enough of it.
The formulation features 63% of vegetable mucin from wild-yam root and combined with multiple types of peptides, ceramides, humectants, niacinamide and panthenol to support the overall skin-barrier health and function.
Intensive Vitamin C Ampoule
Waterless formulation (solvent is propanediol) containing both two forms of Vitamin C of Ascorbic Acid(14%) and Ethyl Ascorbic Ether(6%). Brand website indicated that this was a ‘20% pure vitamin c’ – no, it’s not. This is wrong messaging. Ascorbic Acid is only ‘pure’ vitamin C while Ethyl Ascorbyl Ether is a derivative produced from Ascorbic Acid - but that doesn’t mean the formulation doesn’t work. There’s inclusion of soothing ingredients like Chamomile extract (alpha-bisabolol) and Centella Asiatica Extract. The formulation as a whole justify itself as a multi-purpose serum, delivering antioxidants, brightening and mild soothing effect. There’s no need for another extra layer of serum unless your skin has other conditions like dehydration.
The waterless texture can be a tad oily on initial use. I would recommend just a pump and not two as it take some time to settle into the skin. For someone who like to slightly overdose skincare products, I find this product best in the PM, purely for lifestyle reason.
730 Daily Moisture Cream
Moisturiser is all about texture – and the brand description on this product is accurate! This is a ‘mild’ moisturising cream. That speaks to the in between texture of a lightweight gel to a true emollient rich cream. The soft plastic tub hosts the fluid-y cream, but has the look and feel of a rich cream, with sufficient slip and great with spreadability. I’ve to let the cream set for a while (say 3-5 minutes) before moving onto sunscreen, again making this a better product for the PM. Contains sugar-cane derived squalane, glycerin and Capric Triglyceride – all proven nourishing ingredients.
With #kbeauty going from strength to strength, I am continuously observing how advanced innovation could happen. Message me below if you have tried any of these products, or tell me what’s your favourite kbeauty products.
