For years, I’ve only use and swear by Shu Uemura Hard Formula Brow Pencil (I wear shade stone grey). My recent quest to find a replacement yielded no results. I still think this is the best eye brow pencil in the world and I have easily 5 in the stash just in case I run out. They have to be sharpened by hand in store and won’t work if you use a traditional cosmetic sharpener. When it comes to make up, I am a believer of getting two things right to make you instantly look better – complexion, it is the largest surface area and bounces light to make you look instantly more youthful, and your brows, getting it right frame your face and make you look more energetic.
Anastasia Beverly Hills has so much buzz and I am quite late to the game. I’ve tried a fair share over the past year and ready to comment on them now. Almost all the celebrity make up artists I followed on social media are singing high praises on the brow products and they almost sounds to good to be true - and they are, in my case - they simply don’t work for me. I’ve seen great results from people using them and certainly impressed with how the founder Anastasia Soare created a brand purely out of just brows, I don’t share that similar experience.
Brand says: Our brow makeup lineup has everything you need to create your ideal brow from start to finish—just prime, fill, detail, highlight and set. No matter your eyebrow shape, size or style, we’ve got your covered. I think I’ve tried all, if not most of the brow products in the range. I won’t be repurchasing any of them and here’s why:
Clear Browl Gel – I’ve went through 3 tubs of this and decided that I am done. The hold is simply not enough. I like to brush my brows up and they just don’t stay throughout the day.
Dipbrow Gel – this is a nightmare and I have to chuck the whole tub away. The juice (product inside) clump up and you can’t go straight from tub to brow. I’ve to do what most make up artist do – wipe it over a tissue and then very slowly and super gently stroke it across the brows, and in many occasions take a clean spoolie and brush it all over again to remove access product. This means 90% of the product eventually went to waste. I am not spending so much money for product to go onto a tissue paper. More than 3 strokes will get you looking like clown as it’s over-pigmented and brow dandruff will appear.
Brow Freeze – I am a little awkward with this product when it comes to application. When I apply the product? Before or after a pencil? I can’t seem to find the right instructions anywhere. Also, the pot melted in a humid weather – literally a pot that went to waste.
Brow Wiz – super-thin eye brow pencil. If I were to repurchase anything from the brand, this is likely to be the one, but the mini version, purely for the convenience when it comes to travel. The mini version lasted a very long time.
Brow Definer – this is the fat, triangular-shape version of Brow Wiz. I am not good with crayon / soft eye brown pencil generally, I tend to over-use pressure during application then I end up painting on dark, unnatural and almost flat looking brows. You can’t paint on hair-like brows with this pencil.
Brow Pen – literally a pen with wet ink and a fine tip. I’ve neither the skills (I’ve tried multiple times) and patience (main reason really) to draw fine hairs with this brow. They don’t look natural on me. I tried so hard to like it but I simply do not have the patience.
Make up is all about convenience and speed. The products don’t work for me but doesn’t mean they won’t work for you. Let me know if you like any of them in the comments box below.
